This weekend is great, it is exactly what I needed. I needed a reminder that I do indeed have friends outside of Oberlin, and that they are great people.

Yes, I do need to do work, but I craved Kentucky. Like when you were little and you got sick, then felt better and wanted to play outside, but your mother told you that you had to stay inside until your fever was complete gone. Homework is the last little inch of that Oberlin fever I've been having, and being here for Thanksgiving is like being old enough to know better and the diving head first into the swimming pool. Feels good.

Jessica's mom cooks her traditional and Thanksgiving lunch. The family eats in casual attire, her mom is still wearing sweat pants after cooking a gigantic meal. I like that. After a break for our over-filled stomachs and a romp outdoors in the beautiful and sunny 50 degree weather, Jessica and I come back in for Derby Pie, a fantastic and delicious Kentucky original (and perhaps the only kind of pie I really like).

(not really like either picture of course)

After pie, Jessica, her girly younger sister, her now-two-inches-taller-than-me younger brother, her adorable and quirky mother, and her humorous father all get into there car and head to jessica's mother's parents' house. I assumed no one would remember me since It was a few hour period a year ago. Yet, every person I met on the way to the door at least vaguely remembered me from last year and gave me a gigantic hug.

When I went inside, the entire poker table stopped their game and all gave a gigantic groan. Their grandfather said something like, "Oh no, it's you again". You see last year I had beaten them at poker, badly. They play for money. I bought myself a fancy "Burbon Ball French Toast" the following day with the money I made- paid all in quarters. This year I didn't fair as lucky; I came out about even. However, I love playing poker with Jessica's outlandish relatives. Her grandparents are not like stereotypical grandparents. Her grandfather was drunk and lively and cracking ridiculous jokes with his thick Kentucky accent- from bad poker jokes to dirty jokes. I was thoroughly entertained.

Now go and get drunk at a frat party."
Kind of amazing.

Flowers and Spanish- definitely the most effective way to make me all sparkly eyed.

Catherine is coming into town Friday (tomorrow)!

Haven't been as productive as I should be. No my eyes don't sort of burn and twitch if I accidentally look upwards- it's awesome!

p.s. About the music I posted last time, I tried setting it up on my friend's computer and for some reason the password works on mine, but comes up as an "invalid password" on hers.

I wanted to remind myself that learning languages is something I like to do, not something I have to do. First German song that came to mind- 99 red balloons (99 Luftballons).

Turned out great because later that day my friend Joe and I ended up watching the video on you tube and signing along to the lyrics in German. We also ended up finger painting with Jenny, Laura, Jacob, and some cool freshman whose names I can't all remember. I ended my day wearing a cowboy hat, a blue nose, and a blue beard.

Serious faliure
I'm not in SITES anymore. I screwed up by missing a mandatory meeting. Consequentially, I got dropped from the program. I apologized and was going to beg the teacher to let me back into the class, but realized that I didn't really deserve to be. I screwed up and I need to accept the consequences.

I'm just not as on top of my shit as I want to be. If I ever learn how to handle an irregular schedule and get myself really organized, I hope that I can go back and do SITES again. Maybe one of these days I will be able to do everything without letting anybody down. For now, I feel like a real idiot. I told Kim I would send her a list of all the teaching ideas I typed up this summer and all the helpful online teaching resources I found. I really hope this doesn't mean saying goodbye to a future in Linguistics.

This week outside of Language:

Despite the fact that I sometimes suck at organizing, I have been doing a lot better at that lately. Room is actually clean and I am on top of things in my classes.

Sometimes when you really screw up, it's nice to remember times in the past where you very easily could have screwed up and didn't. For example, how miserable I would have been if I'd lived in Barrows last year or how much I would have missed out on if I hadn't patched things up with old friends.

Also, it's nice to know that I have some really solid folks in my life who I can count on to make time for me when I really need it. I am really grateful.

*

Tomorrow I will send my parents a check for all any summer expenses prior to having a job. I did better than breaking even, which was my goal.

*

Is it just me or does Harkness seem less social and less radical this year? There is a pretty intense rugby click. I no longer feel like can knock on any door in the house to say hello. Also, while pretty much no one is politically conservative, people seem more conservative in general, or at least more traditional. I mean, beer pong, really?

*

I need to make time to see people more. You should help me with this by stopping by my/ma'ayan's room to say hello.

Today was interesting. Seems I can't visit home without some sort of interesting debacle.

Last visit it was a very close call with a car while riding my bike where I found myself slightly underneath the car.
This time it was a attempt to rescue a mouse my cat was carrying in its mouth.

I grabbed the cat and got my mom to take her while I scooped up the mouse. The mouse latched to my middle finger with its teeth. I tried to pull it off for a while, but didn't want to pull to hard and have mouse guts dangling from my finger. Then I tried to pry its jaw free. No success. Finally, I shook it off. After a few small flicks off the wrist, I gave a final violent shake to send the mouse flying into the ceiling. It landed, on its feet even. The next time I was much more careful to pick th thing up by its tail. The mouse is fine as am I. Good news is- probably no rabies.

Back in Oberlin tomorrow (Sunday) night.
Been reading online newspaper articles from El Salvador.
In summary: earthquakes-nothing too serious, school systems/availability of said systems still sucks, people still dirt poor, church cares about AIDS prevention enough to educate but still worried about potential "perversions", and they have a celebration every 31st of July called "Dia de Periodista" or "Day of the Journalist" to commemorate the 17 international and foreign journalist who were killed during the war, bringing some attention to an otherwise ignored struggle.

Hoping to keep relatively up to date on current events there (at least until March elections).

Archbishop of San Salvador (the capital)
View articles here

Also been reading Into The Pink: An Oral History of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual students at Oberlin College from 1937-1991.

Allan Spear '58 writes about his college roommate:

"He was, I suppose, no more homophobic than anyone else at the time, but h indulged in his fare share of faggot jokes, who's queer, and all that sort of thing. At the time of my twenty-fifth reunion, which would have been in 1983, they asked us all to submit a statement for the twenty-fifth anniversary booklet about what you have done over the last twenty-five years in seventy-five words or less. I decided that even in seventy-five words or less my coming out story certainly had to be one of the things that was most important to me in the twenty-five years since I had left Oberlin. I got a letter from this man that I had roomed with Senior year, and it was really a very nice and very touching letter in which he apologized twenty-five years later for the things he had said and the jokes that he told when we had lived together at Oberlin.... That's the first time I had heard from him in twenty-five years and since then we have kept up a sort of correspondence...."

Had a really good conversation with my mom. Yes, this is cheesy and we've never really be a girlmore girls-esque mother-daughter set, but when we do get along, it is pretty damn amazing. She told me cool stories about inspirational people and suggested and awesome idea to take what I am already doing and allow me to get paid and call it a winter term project. I am excited for LA. Parents may follow me back here and meet people and help me move in. Stay tuned.

I've read up on all the independent major guidelines. I'm seriously gonna do it guys.
Dear IM Committee,
I love you. Can I have your consent?
xxx
~Susan

City Councilman David Ashenhurst is pretty cool.
No, I am not on his staff, but he did me a favor. No, not that kind of favor. He tried to reason with an unreasonable bus driver for me (see older posts for more detailed story). Anyway, I got a chance to thank him when I passed by on the way to the bank. He seems like a really interesting guy. He offered to buy me a beer...corrected himself, and offered to buy me a coffee sometime and chat about city council stuff or whatever else. You know what? I wasn't the least bit sketched out.
In fact, contrary to Eddie Izzard, in this case, "Do you wanna cup of coffee?" really, truly does not mean sex. Also, the first time someone other than my super attractive brilliant high school tutor named Liz (probably the reason I started drinking coffee) asked me to go for coffee sometime without sketching me the fuck out.

The entire night everyone was ridiculously friendly and polite.

Some of my favorite quotes included:

Me- pouring more champagne into glass next to guy with interesting tie.
Guy- " Are you trying to get my wife drunk".
Me "Yes, yes I am"

Me- collecting empty glasses from tables.
Different guy- "I was going to finish this champagne, but the rest is for you"
Me- (in surprise) "Th-Thanks"
Me- pouring champagne down sink. Thought- "what a shame".

Me- "Sorry I was in your way, sir. It's hard to get by with these giant bags (gesture to garbage bag full of beer bottles that I attempt to drag behind me)"
Bald bearded man who had been making eyes at Aries all night- "Don't worry about it." Pause "That is really a shame that you had to work so hard all night. Can I make it up to you and buy you a drink?"
Me- pause "Er..um..I can't"
Bald-beard- (sad face) "That's what they always say"

The first half of the evening was not super exciting. However, post-dinner picked up when everyone started to dance. Yes, including us. We kept to the sidelines so as not to offend our boss. However, I wasn't too worried since I caught a glimpse of her dancing too. Aries, Jess Cummings, Molly Lidz, and I danced all out to the classics of the 80's and 90's. There was a brief point in which the slightly irritating dj with spiked up bleach blond hair came over and joined us.

The other wedding-goers seemed to be amused. However, we were not the only ones dancing getting into it. At once point about 15 or 20 of the guys, including the groom and his brother, began a sort of crazy jumping circle that turned into an amateur mosh pit. The brother and his friend did the worm. One man wearing suspenders broke it down while wearing glow in the dark (leopard print?) glasses and a neon green backwards cap. The little blond boy in his formal vest attempted to do some stunts. He got lots of applause. He was also chased by a cute little curl with curly locks. Needless to say, I love these people.

After the wedding was over, Molly and I raced to Stevenson to get the dolly. She won, but she also cheated. We took turns using it as a skateboard while the other one pushed. It was far too much fun for something technically called work.

Catered a wedding yesterday with some conference service folks and a few others. Some of these folks included: Hana (I girl that lived in my floor in barrows week 1 of school), Sergio, Aries, Jenny Saladik, Sarah, and a few others. It's nice doing a job when cool people are around to pass the time with.
We had to wear the interesting catering outfits that read, "campus catering" and button them up to our necks.

Innovation and skill in this job is finding a scrunchy to tie your hair back with or using a water jug as an ice bucket.
We only had decafe coffee, but were instructed to tell the guests it was whatever they wanted to hear. If they wanted regular coffee, we were supposed to run back to the "behind the scenes" catering area and bring back out the same coffee pitcher to fill there cup. Sergio brought out two pitchers at once, occasionally forgetting which one was supposed to be the "decafe" and which one was supposed to be the "caffeinated"

Certain part of this evening reminded me of a terrible rhyme (that I swear is in a real girl scout song I had to sing in 5th grade). The line goes like "coffee sir? Tea sir? Coffee, tea, or me sir?"

However, most of the night was surprisingly fun. I loved that some people were so thankful when we delivered their cake and coffee. I loved watching the bride and groom dance to their first slow song.

A large part of what they paid me for- blowing out candles on the tables, eating cake, and carefully arranging carrots on plates.

In other news:
Elisa woke me up this morning to say goodbye. I intended to get up early to see her off, but she said she would just wake me...and well, I was too exhausted to persist.

Sean is gone for the summer. I think he is one of those people that it is impossible for anyone to dislike. I really respect those people.

Sometimes, every once in a great while, don't you wish you could take someone outside- old school style, kick their ass, and then move on with your lives as though nothing ever happened? Granted, even if I could, I would probably lose miserably.

Yesterday I went with Sarah Thompson to a gay pride parade.

The day went something like this-
Breakfast of fake sausage, cheesy eggs, and coffee. Hurry to bus.
At 8:44am Sarah and I were less than a half block away from the LCT stop when we see the bus pass.
Sarah- It was definitely not the bus, they are never early
me- ok we'll wait

wait wait wait

it was the bus.

We decide to wander around town and run into Leah (housemate) and friend (John). I mention what happened. He offers to drive us. COOL!

We ask for directions and end up with a spot in the parade and free t-shirts from some nice Equality for Ohio folks. We walk in the parade carrying flags, handing out cards, and occasionally helping to carry the banner. Then we watch the rest of the parade:

Cleveland Drag Kings and Girls- we saw them preform to
They were amazing. Let's just say, one of them involved
a drag vampire. Those too words, in the same sentence,
SO MUCH AWESOME. Not to mention oh my god,
attractive, SO attractive.

Went up and talked to them afterwards. They were all really
nice and really down to earth. They told us about their
upcoming SUPER HERO THEMED DRAG SHOW. Need I say
more; I'll be there.

This was a party bus that we saw going down the parade route.
It had little rainbow windmills attached to the sides and in case
you can't tell, the little fuzzy dots are bubbles! The side of the
bus reads: Metro Youth.

This cool lady was
wearing the most amaz-
ing outfit. We went up
and talked to her later
(everyone there was
really friendly). A girl she
was talking to was saying
how much she wanted to
go to Oberlin.
Her outfit also included
a Q on the front. (I am a
terrible gay, my first
thought was that the Q
stood for Quail Man).
Note the roller skates.

At the festival after the parade:

These were some of the performers for one of the fetish shows
advertised above. They were scantily clad and there were
chains and whips and collars involved. Also one woman wear
leather bra that looked like a spider web (and was as revealing)
and one dorky, yet endearing ring leader guy with top hat and
goggles.

We also saw a local rock band perform called Equals 4 with one very hot guitarist/back up singer. The back of her guitar said "Lick Me".

Sarah and I were starting to leave just as it started to get really windy. There was this construction site we had to walk by with a huge mound of dirt and grit that was getting tossed up into a huge dust whirlwind. We made it into subway for cover. There we ran into the CDK or the Cleveland Drag Kings from earlier. After eating dinner and hanging out in the subway for a while, the wind finally died down. However, it had started to pour. We were shoe-squishing and twist out the water from our shirt sleeves wet. It certainly didn't help that we had just come from seeing so very many hot lesbians. I was so soaked that you could even see the contents of my short pockets from the outside of the shorts and the pride from my rainbow underwear.

We took turns changing in a corner of the subway into our dryer extra free shirts we got that day and then took the RTA to the airport. Andrew and Erica picked us up from there. They brought towels- you guys are absolutely wonderful people!

At the end of the day (and I can only speak for myself, but I am going to assume that most of these apply for Sarah as well), we were: covered in grit and dust, wet, turned on, tired, and sun burnt. My parents, having given up on keeping me clean in kindergarten, invented a saying that went something like, "Well, the dirtier you are- the more covered in paint and dirt and marker, the more bruised from soccer and kickball- the more fun you had today". By there standards and mine, It was a very good day.

To top it all off, at the end of the day I checked my e-mail and found out they want me to start working occasional catering jobs right away- JOB!!!. YESSS!!!

p.s. I had planned on going to the chalk walk since I didn't think this would happen. I'm sorry I missed it. I want to hear all about cool things people drew and interesting things that happened.

p.p.s. glad there was, in fact, no tornado.
Collin, the boy that made high school bearable, called me yesterday. Granted, I finally got up the balls to call him first, but him calling me back is a big deal. We haven't talked since October break for technical and other reasons. He stopped checking his facebook because I was the only person he would talk to on it. My AIM doesn't work. He doesn't do phone.
It's hard.

Point being, It had been a long time. It was really, really nice to hear from him. He doesn't believe me, but he would do well at Oberlin. However, the neoliberalism might drive him a little bonkers.

Had fun hanging out with Natalie and Kurt and then went to the house where Catherine, Benny, Molly, and a bunch of other people are living. I ate cake, played taboo, and set off fireworks at Jess Cumming's birthday celebration.

Saw Jenny Saladik for the first time in a while. The same day Sean, my housemate, introduced me to kill bill. dear god, what a wonderful movie. Who but Uma Thurman could possibly be bad ass enough to will herself out of being a paraplegic?

Watched Blue Velvet with Aries and then spent a full day making dulce de leche.
Blue velvet was horrific. It made sex sound horribly unappealing. However, the dulce de leche was delicious. Commenting on the most horrendous aspects of the movie with Aries was pretty fun too. Aries also cleaned my kitchen, which was sweet, but way way too nice of her. Thank you Aries.

As a random side note....my, of the cat formerly known as my cat, had an abortion and got spayed. The abortion is sad because I don't see it as entirely necessary. However, it is a very good thing that she got spayed. They kind of did a shit job, so I hope she heals okay. I might take her to another vet to get them to look at it .

Also, Ivy introduced me to Garfield without Garfield comics:
http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/page/4
good for a momentary laugh. It is Garfield with all of Garfield's lines removed, making john look rather like the pathetic lonely middle aged man he is. Like this one entry from May 22nd:

there's also dysfunctional family circus:

Does Daddy know you're a lesbian?

or this one:

Don't feel too bad, Daddy.
